Great Taste Isn't the Same As Design Experience
by Kelly Reed
Think about something you’re naturally good at — a job, a hobby, a skill you’ve spent years refining. Now, rewind to the beginning — before the trial and error, the learning curve, the facepalm moments. That’s what it’s like to have great taste without design experience.
When I worked as an interior designer, people often assumed my talent came from having good taste. And while style certainly played a part, it took years to learn the industry — from construction and sourcing to working with reliable trades and understanding which materials hold up over time. It’s what you don’t know that can cost you.
Small mistakes, big price tags
Take light fixtures, for example: Does the new base cover the old one, or will you have to repaint the ceiling? That stylish new range hood — does it need make-up air? Or that beautiful zellige tile you found on sale — it may cost four times more to install than standard tile. These are the things I learned the hard way early on. Now, every space I walk into is informed by those hard-earned lessons.
Design help doesn’t have to be expensive
You don’t need to hire a designer for a full-blown remodel. Many professionals offer hourly consultations. Even a few hours of expert advice — on paint, finishes, lighting, or layout — can save you thousands and help you avoid costly mistakes. Don’t be afraid to talk budget. A good designer will tell you honestly if they’re the right fit, or refer you to someone who is.
Finding the right fit
Whether you’re looking for a bit of guidance or help bringing an entire vision to life, the most important thing is finding a designer you click with — someone who listens, collaborates and makes you feel comfortable. The best design work happens when your taste is elevated, not overridden.
Ask potential designers:
Do you connect with my aesthetic?
Are you open to collaboration?
What’s your approach to budget and project management?
If your budget doesn’t stretch far, consider a refresh — some updated lighting, new paint and thoughtful styling can go a long way. For ideas, check out our Before & After page to see how small changes can make a big impact.
